Messin around at the music store

It’s a very silly video, but we had a lot of fun that day.

S. E. Miller videos:

Steve Miller, the photographer for our local weekly The New Times, just wrapped up a rather large project. He shot a series of ‘dead’ artists for their Autumn Arts special which included several prominent local artists as subjects. They were rather elaborate in some setups and there was much preparation to do, so Steve had a great idea of setting up his smaller digital camera and record the setups in a time lapse style to document the events. The videos looked a bit boring by themselves so asked if he could set my music to them. Here are the final results. Several interesting, behind-the-scenes on a photo shoot videos with my original music:

Here’s us at The Clubhouse in San Luis Obispo playing Minor Swing. Mr. Abe Perlstein caught the tail end of our version right as we started trading fours and even caught a great little bass solo at the end!

Enjoy

Merry Christmas

So, as usual, my family all have some sort of musical tendency in one way or another and we dicide to record a song since we’re all together. I got my dad to play the Bossa Nova Clave pattern, my sister to play some nice melodys, and my brother to learn the bass patterns. I figured that would be the best way to play something that everyone could play together.

So here we are, playing ‘Freddie the Freeloader’ in a Bossa Nova style. Enjoy!
I think it’s an improvement from last years!

Oscar Peterson RIP

The term “Chops Chopperson” could be accurately used when describing the fire of Oscar Peterson’s Piano playing. He passed away on the day before Christmas Eve.

From the wiki:
Oscar Emmanuel Peterson, (15 August 1925 – 23 December 2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. Called the “Maharajah of the keyboard” by Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson is considered to have been one of the greatest pianists of all time. He played to audiences worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years.

Here’s some old footage of his trio (With ultimate Upright Player Ray Brown and killing drummer Ed Thigpen) playing the Cubano Chant, a favorite of mine:

And here’s this kid, Win Dem Herker, who transcribed one of Oscar’s Piano solos and completely tears it up, a must see:

BHS plays MFC:

A friend of Jarred Pope (Drummer for Crosby & MFC) is the band leader over at Bakersfield High School, and he decided to work up a little Mother Funk Conspiracy into the program. In this video, around 6 minutes, the band breaks into ‘Hammbone Steaksauce’ from our last album. What a treat!

Also, here’s an mp3 from the Sabroso sessions earlier this month (with an intro on the upright):

Pretty nerve wracking. And silly too.

My Christmas Break

I haven’t had anything to post about for a week, what with Christmas and no gigs and all. But here’s a music related incident anyhoo:

I’m at my folks’ house for the break, in Southern Oregon, just outside of Medford, and I’m kind of having music withdrawals. So I organize my family to show them some of the new salsa music I’ve been learning and playing. I pick a simple and recognizable piece. What better than ‘Oye Como Va’.

My little brother Jake is 15 (Happy Birthday!) and is playing the baritone sax, little sister Charlotte is 13 and playing the flute. My father Ron is a great lover of music and was instrumental (no pun intended) in my decision to pursue music. However, he is not a musician. So imagine my surprise when he was holding down cowbell and clave patterns!

Here’s a short clip of us playing just the first part of the song. For having NEVER played any music of this type, and still being somewhat beginners at their instruments, I’d say we sounded pretty good and had a load of fun!

Who Is This Amazing Woman?

I don’t know, but I know three things:

She’s in Brazil,

She rocks the upright bass with a german grip arco style,

and she’s gorgeous.

Besides that I’m pretty wiped out. The Leadbirds played at SOHO in Santa Barbara last night with Katherine Shorr, this righteously cool singer songwriter lady from LA. It was a great show, even though we had to play a few Christmas songs, which I absolutely loathe, but we had a good time. Great turnout for a wed. night show.

Woke up at Kenny Loggins’ house (He’s out on the road, which meant I could sleep in the guest room!) and drove back to SLO just in time to work 8 hours at the music store as a retail guy. Easy money, hangin in a music store and getting paid. It’s a good music-related supplement to my income. And I happened to sell like $1200 worth of gear for my man Dan Ernst, the owner.

But damn, talk about being wiped out. Had a rehearsal with the Playbacks after work, and needless to say I think I’ll be sleeping in tomorrow…..
